Chilla Facts

  • Chinchillas are rodents. Their teeth continually grown throughout their lives, so they need to constantly chew.
  • They are native to Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
  • They live in colonies of up to 100 chinchillas.
  • They are nocturnal.
  • They have a lifespan of up to 15 years.
  • They have no sweat or scent glands.
  • They can tolerate cold temperatures well, but can easily become overheated.
  • Their fur doesn't react well to water. To clean themselves, they roll around in a dust bath.
  • They eat hay, pellets, fruit, vegetables, and LOVE treats.
  • They are active and playful and fairly easy to tame. They love routine.
  • They are very curious and love to jump, hop, and climb.
